Executive Summary The Village Egg Bank Project in Egg Currency (VEBEC) was created in response to the increased poverty rates caused by inconsistent rainfall patterns in Northern Uganda. Since majority of the people in this region depend on agriculture for their food and livelihood, the crop failures that result from such weather patterns have made it difficult to feed their families and provide other basic necessities. In light of this, the Egg Bank project aims at training and supporting family units to keep poultry for egg production. Eggs produced are brought to a collection center on weekly basis (called egg bank). Records are kept for each family unit. The management of the egg bank looks for market and sells the eggs. An agreed percentage of the money from sales is given back to help the family during the next collection day. Two things happen with the remaining balance: a small fraction is deducted to cover running costs and to recover initial capital lent to the beneficiary while the remainder is a savings for the owner with the egg bank. Amounts recovered are used to support new beneficiaries to start up their projects.
